It’s basically an (extremely limited) production version of Mercedes-Benz’s own C111 concept from 1970.
Minus the rotary, as the Isdera instead went for a Mercedes-Benz V8.

Mr Brian is right. The Isdera Imperator is based on the CW 311, a one-off by the guy behind what later was Isdera, Eberhard Schulz, and the BB Buchmann “tuner” company.
I think it is obvious that Schulz paid homage to the C111 type I and II or at least they inspired him... a lot (the CW 311, allegedly, was intended as a successor to the 50s 300SL).
The C111 was not so much a concept as a very nicely styled testbed for different kinds of engines (yes, Wankel included). Unfortunately the types III, IV etc were almost purely designed for breaking records and they are not even remotely “streetable” as the original ones were. They also look disgusting.
The C111 testbeds were designed in the 60s. It would be extremely worrying indeed if Isdera had just decided to put some new clothes on a twenty-year old chassis.

Funny story: allegedly the engine bay of the R107 SLs was designed with the Wankel engine in mind, so...
Felix Wankel (who, if I remember correctly, could not drive) wanted a car with his engine so he managed to acquire an M-B marine Wankel prototype unit which was duly installed in a 350 SL body. The car still exists.
I seem to remember Mercedes-Benz disliked the idea intensely and had nothing to do with it, and even the 350 SL had to be bought complete for the conversion.
What I cannot recall is how Wankel got hold of the engine.
